Tongans Entertained, And Entertain

The Tongan Rugby football team, in Nelson to open Its tour of New Zealand, were entertained by the Celtic Rugby Club early one evening, but the players ended by entertaining club members and guests with a selection of songs and dances which brought sustained and uninhibited applause. Several of the songs, sung in four-part harmony, were especially well-received.

After some light refreshment, club member Joe Paul made the traditional Maori challenge, which the manager, Father David Mullins, accepted (at left Then the fun started. A Maori group from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints entertained (bottom left) and soon enticed the Tongans into the dances (below). The team responded with some of their own numbers (centre left).
