New Site For Council's Engineering Department

After 30 years in the makeshift yards of Paru Paru Road, the engineering department of the Nelson City Council recently shifted to its new site on the reclamation and on Vickerman Street. Here, at a cost of $80,000, the council has erected new buildings and developed the four acres of land to best suit the needs of the department. Included in the buildings are a cafeteria, and a wash, shower, locker and toilet block for staff, a big storeroom, vehicle sheds and workshops. There is now ample space for parking and a high fence encloses the site. This should help prevent the pilfering which used to occur at the council's old yard at Paru Paru Road.

The pic above shows the layout of the new site.

Spacious ruck and implement sheds now permit the garaging of some of the department trucks and implements and there is adequate room outside for the parking of heavier vehicles.

For 30 years the engineering staff had only primitive washing facilities. Now, each man has his own locker, there are several shower cubicles and a huge wash basin, with foot controls for operating the flow of water, dominates the room.
