U.S. Destroyer On Nelson Visit

The Uss Power, fresh from operations off the Vietnam coast, visited Nelson for a short rest period before returning to her home base in Florida. During her three-day visit the destroyer was opened to the public and many took the opportunity to look over the vessel. For the crew, their Nelson stay was all too short. The young men who made up the officers and crew of the vessel impressed with their excellent manners and co-operative spirit. The only untoward incident involving the vessel occurred during her berthing in a 26-knot south-westerly wind. As she came in to the main wharf her stern brushed the bow of the Dutch freighter Straat-Banka and her ensign staff was snapped from its mounting.

At left, a telephoto shot appears to sit the destroyer on the end of the main wharf and, below, sailors duck as the ensign staff comes adrift as it was forced against the freighter.

The impression here that the Naval Relations Officer, Lt Commander W.Strong, is about to create an international incident is quite erroneous.
