Plunket Parade

Floats, bands, and marching girls paraded down Trafalgar Street one Friday evening to mark the end of the Nelson Plunket Society's mini-car raffle. More than 6500 people paid 50c a ticket to guess the mileage a Fiat Bambino would travel on a full tank of petrol. The car was driven all day by A. A. patrol officer Dennis King and it finally stopped in Trafalgar Park, having covered 262 miles and 822 yds - an average of 58.2 m.p.g. Lucky winner was Marian Green, Christchurch, who guessed within 28 yds of the correct figure. That's Marion, right after collecting her prize. Bellow, right, Mr King makes the final measurement. Bellow, the winning ticket displayed by president, Mrs Gloria Longley. Others there were Harold Longley, Marilyn Powell, Tim Kinzett, Norman Bourne, Ngaire Scott and Graham Anderson. Bottom, an outsize Plunket Baby.
