A Job in Australia

Gisborne girls find their way to many countries, and take on a variety of jobs. One such is Elaine Hammond, formerly of 138 Stanley road, who since last February has been on a working holiday in Australia. After visiting Melbourne and Sydney Elaine set out for Perth, where she enjoyed a month off work, and then took up a halrdressing position for a few weeks.

Noticing an advertisement in the paper for a talent scout, she applied, and with three others was selected from a large number of applicants. For six weeks she was employed by Hickory (Dowd Associates) as a talent scout for the Miss Australia Quest, touring the north-west parts of Western Australia interviewing girls in all the towns she visited, encouraging them to enter the quest. Dowd Associates sponsor the quest, and the funds raised by entrants go to the Spastic Welfare Association.

Interesting experiences included visiting a gold mine at Mt. Magnet, where she saw the pouring of gold ingots. Holding a 484 oss ingot, she was able to reflect on the fact that its value was £6000. "I would have loved to have brought it home wlth me," she said.

The picture above shows Blaine and others being briefed for the job by Mr P. L. Nicholson, secretary of the Miss Australia Committee.
