Sirens in Sackcloth

×

When members of the Makaraka-Mata-Whero Country Women's Institute decide ed to dress up in sackcloth about 12 months ago, their first thoughts were no doubt to do something in humorous line. But it didn't turn out like that...not at all. By the time they had made their costumes, using sugar sacks for material, they had obviously demonstrated that ingenuity and good taste can make even sackcloth look fashionable...so much so that at their first performance in public, their act was greeted not with laughter but with vigorous applause.
Since then the group, pictured on the preceding page and above, has performed a dozen times at various functions. The mannequin parade starts with morning wear and ends with night attire.
