Let us Spray....

In the old days when the weeds grew, it was a case of get out the hoe and start work, laddie.

Today the control of weeds is a chemical science of increasing complexity, requiring in-volved formulae and machinery.

To keep abreast of weed problems in the district, a research team from Ivon Watkins Ltd. recently put down over 100 plots to investigate local problems in crops of maize, peas, tomatoes and asparagus...the largest series of weed control trials ever conducted locally.

This gadget is a new one to Gisborne. It is a Logarithmic Sprayer, in action on a Pa-tutahi farm. It lays down a gradually weakening strengtn of spray on a plot, so that the most economical strength to kill the weeds can be determined. The operator is Alan Smith, and in the background is Dr. Mason.

Another research instrument for small plot work is this Oxford precision sprayer, seen here spraying Californian thistle in an aspara-gus crop.
