Because the flashing sign on the Jolly Stockman hotel at Matawhero was considered to be a distraction to passing mototists, it was hauled down recently and replaced with a non-flashing sign, which is larger but more sedate. Monks' crane is seen in the picture lifting off the outsize bottle and barrel, with the new sign on a truck in the foreground.

Looks like Juliet Morrison, one of the Industries Fair contest entrants, has given up shop work for the call of the open.

The fire brigade came at the double when a welder at Monk Bros. in Gladstone Road burned through his tube, causing a proper scatter. Firemen didn't hesitate, got the taps turned off before the joint blew up.

Railway Gym turned on a parents' night for the wind-up of the season, when fathers, mothers (minus fingernails when they went home!), brothers and sisters came along to see their young hopefuls fight. Here Mike Brown and Trevor Allan are mixing it.
