Pictures From The Past

Our pictures from the past for this month come from Mr Wally Ingram, of Wellington. Mr Ingram was in Gisborne in 1925, and used his camera to good effect to secure this interesting series.

Note in picture below left, the changes which have taken place in the buildings in Reads Quay and Customhouse Street, before the new section of the Post Office was built.

The old kaiti Bridge across the Turanganui River. This was demolished and in 1925 work was in progress on the new bridge, as shown in the other Pictures on 1925 page.

The first span poured.

Four spans almost completed.

The official opening was a great day for Gisborne.

Anzac Day 1925....again there is a big difference in the surroundings of the War Memorial compared with today.

×

The newly-opened Memorial Home in Upper Ormond Road as it was in 1925. The obvious comment about this picture is that trees do make a difference, don't they.... the scene bears little resemblance to that of today.

Main streets, 1925. At left, Marine Parade in Wairoa. At right, Gladstone Road in Gisborne. The big earthquake, and the precautions which followed, noticeably altered the appearance of Gladstone Road.
