Mobilgas Economy Run

Gisborne was the starting point for the 1960 Mobilgas Economy Run this year. Twenty-four cars began their 758-mile journey from Franks Motors in Grey Street, in the best of weather conditions.

From Gisborne the entrants went down to Levin, up to New Plymouth and back to Wellington via the Wairarapa.

Roy Tucker and George Foster, of Opoutama, took third place in the large car class. The only other local entrants, Mrs Mountford and Russ Wilcox, were not placed.

So that not a drop of petrol should be used after the final "topping-up", all the cars were pushed from the garage to the starting point.
