In The Mountains

An experienced mountaineer, looking at the pictures on this page, could be forgiven if he asked "Where in the Southern Alps were these photographs taken?"

The truth is they were not taken in the Southern Alps at all, but up the East Coast of the North Island, during a winter ascent of Mt. Hikurangi (5606 ft), north-west of Tokomaru Bay.

The climb was made by two members of the Gisborne Canoe & Tramping Club, Dave Hughes and Tom Bayliss.

Snowed up, Hikurangi's rocks look truly alpine.
