Big Raid on Gisborne

The end of last month was marked by a massed raid on Gisborne by the combined strength of 19 Orphans Clubs from the Waikato, who in the tradition of Savages and Orphans, were given a "warm welcome" by local kin. Their leaders, after being challenged in Maori fashion, were bundled on to a truck, and supposedly "cooked", cannibal fashion, on a parade through the main street. Assembled at Watties Canneries, the visitors were officially welcomed and treated to afternoon tea. In the evening they provided a memorable programme in the War Memorial Hall, which was packed to the doors.

Fearsome challenge party was headed by Denis Kohn. Behind him are Barry Ellis, Win Ellis, Bill Paku, Bruce Papworth and Bill Wilkie.

Traditional challenge to leaders of Waikato party, Ron Richardson, chief Orphan, and Ted Jenkins, secretary, took place in Derby Street as party arrived. At left, challenger Denis Kohn throws down "olive branch", which is picked up (right) by Ron Richardson, signifying that the raid is of a friendly nature.

In spite of this, Ron and Ted were soon in the "cooker", being threatened by "Savages" in assorted raiment, bearing outsize knives and forks. Title on "Pai Kart" is presumably made up from names of Gisborne Orphans Club and Savage Club heads, I. J. Corn and John Thorburn.

In his welcome, Izzy Corn talked about Gisborne's prospects for the future. "Some day," he said, "a fairy wand will wave...."
"....And you'll have hair!" shouted a Waikato wag. From left, Orphans secretary Max Fry, The Mayor, Mr Barker, Savage Club Rangatira John Thorburn, Savage Club secretary Eddie Caughey (obscured) and visitors Ron Richardson and Ted Jenkins.
