Rare Sight

Here's a sight that hasn't been seen in Poverty Bay for a long time.

The pictures show a reaper and binder harvesting a crop of oats on the Ormond farm of Mr Bruce McKenzie (who is driving the tractor).

Aboard the reaper and binder is Mr George Grayson, of Ormond, who well remembers how to operate these temperamental gadgets, from the days when they were pulled by a couple of draught horses instead of a tractor.

After stacking, the crop is cut into chaff for horse fodder.

Rear view shows binder tossing out sheaves, tied with twine (and that, children, is how "binder twine" gets its name.)
