Diver at Work

These pictures show a Gisborne Harbour Board diver, Glen Gordon, going down in the harbour channel to investigate papa formations for pile-driving.

There will be much interest taken in the near future when divers attempt to reach the sunken Holmglen off Timaru.

Glen wears the standard diving suit in these pictures, but he.operates from a ladder in relatively shallow water. For the deepsea job on the Holmglen, divers will be lowered on a staging.

Almost ready to go under, diver has weights on, but face plate is still missing. Note knife at waist.

Going, going.... nearly gone

With diver underwater, Des Wilson acts as diver's attendant, while Rod Richardson (at right) keeps in touch by telephone. The weighted rope adjacent to the ladder is known as the shot line and is a marker for the diver. Next is the air hose, and next again is the life line and telephone line combined.
