Election Day
Local body election day came and went in Gisborne with very little to show in the way of changes as far as city representation was concerned.
All sitting members of the Council, Hospital Board, Harbour Board, and Catchment Board who offered their services again were re-elected.
Most interest was centred in the election for Mayor, where Mr H. H. Barker, who has been Mayor for nine years, was opposed by Mr A. H. De Costa. Mr Barker was returned with a majority of 670.
Final election results were:

Typical of the scene in the many polling booths around the city: Doug Carlyle, Les Sutton and Drew Stein ready for business at the Wai-kanae booth.
First Mayoral job for Mr and Mrs Barker was official opening of girls' surf club season down at the beach. They are seen here with club president Mrs Hazel McLeod.
