The days when shingle had to be shovelled by hand are long since over, and it has become a common sight to see elevators, tractor-loaders and other mechanical devices being used to shift and lift heavy materials. The machine pictured here is a shingle-shifter of gargantuan proportions. It pokes its snout into railway trucks of metal from Nuhaka, and in a few minutes the truckload is on a pile in the yard. It works in the yard of Rock Products Ltd. Along the railway line from Grey St.

One of the fine varieties of iris which Mr D'Arcy Blackburn is now growing at his iris farm in Kings Road, Hexton, seen in picture right. Two years ago this section was a wilderness of grass and fennel. Now it grows a rich profusion of beautiful blooms.
