Civic Service Review

Brilliant sunshine prevailed to match the brilliant programme presented at the Civic Services Review held on October 31 at the Childers Road Reserve, The review was organised by the St. John Ambulance Brigade Band to raise contest funds, and featured a large number of displays which the big crowd present found both interesting and enjoyable. A star item was the appearance of two police dogs.

The review started with a street parade led by the Ambulance Brigade Band. At the reserve, the new St. John ambulance was dedicated.

A splendid display was given by the two Police Dogs, Dante and Axel. After a demonstration of the heights to which canine obedience can be developed, the dogs gave a jumping display, and then one of the pair "showed his fangs" against a constable wearing protective arm pads.

One of the most interesting displays at the review was that of the Power Board crew which demonstrated the erection of a pole, followed by the rescue and resuscitation of an "electrocuted" patient. The "post-hole" was very quickly dug by a mechanical digger of the spiral type, while the pole was erected in a few minutes with a truck crane. When the "accident" occurred the "patient" was carried down to ground level, where he was given artificial respiration.
