Contest for Mayoralty

Gisborne is to have a contest for the Mayoralty when the local body elections are held on Saturday, November 21. Mr A. H. De Costa, who was elected to the City Council three years ago, will oppose the sitting Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, Mr Barker has been Mayor for nine years.

There are 16 nominations for the nine seats on the Council, of which 15 are pictured here. The exception is Mr H. L. Nicholas, whose picture was not available at time of going to press.

Seven nominations were received for the six city seats on the Hospital Board, and there will also be an election for city members of the Catchment Board. For the Power Board and Harbour Board no election will be held as nominations are equal to requirements.

Catchment Board candidates (not pictured) for the two city seats are: Barker, P. F.; * Macdonaid, R.; Richardson, A. N.

Notable retirements this year are Mr R. A. Keeling, M. P., from the City Council, Mr F. R. Bali from the Power Board, and Mr J. F. Hair from the Catchment Board. Mr Ball has been chairman of the Power Board since its inception 35 years ago, and Mr Hair has been chairman of the Catchment Board since its inception 14 years ago.
