Record Breakers

To shell and bag over 1000 bags of maize in a day is something like breaking the four-minute mile. A while ago Les Ladd's team from Patutahi and their Moline machine put up the record to 1001 baga in 9 hours. Faced with the prospect of a good run on Mr C. B. Burland's farm at Patutahi, they decided to get really stuck into it. The result will take a lot of beating: 1140 bags in an 8-hour day.

The last bag of the record run goes up the elevator, and Mr Burland, at rear, turns it on to mark the occasion. Les Ladd is in front, at left, and members of his gang were Kevin McGrannachan, Paru Carr, Eric Braybrooke, Hector Akurangi, Tui Smith and Raka Williams, Gisborne Transport carriers at right had to keep moving to handle the output. They are Percy Buckingham, Mick Morris and Ron Muir.
