Hockey Veterans Play Again

×

Some of the great days of women's hockey in Gisborne were re-lived on Childers Road Reserve on a wet Saturday afternoon last month, when a team drawn from early members of the Kai Toa Ladies' Hockey Club played a present-day team. And beat them, too! (It should be mentioned that the oldtimers had 20 players on the field, but just the same there were plenty of flashes of that former brilliance which made the club a noted one)
The Kai Toa Club was formed in 1911. Their captain that year was Charlotte Trotter (Mrs C. Morris), and in the picture at left, below, she is seen leading the veterans on to the field at the re-union match. The team is pictured above. With maiden names in brackets, they were: Front row: Dot Guthrie (Single). Minnie McLauchlan (Graham), Gladys Algie (Newen), Charlotte Morris (Trotter) Jean Sangwell (Stein), Myrtle Nicol (McDonald), Sheila Nicklin (O'Rourke). Back row: Ann Stacey (Campbell), Judy Jones, Iris Morrison (McGregor). Ruth Ratcliffe (Hankey). Kath McCormack (McQuillan), Jewel McGrory (Greig), Jean Wilson (Millar), Sadie Hannah (Harrison), Marge Hickman (Bilson) and Bid Roderick (Quick).
