Our Cover

Something outstanding in the way of cloaks is worn in our cover picture this month by Vivienne Rogers, of Gisborne, a member of the Waihirere Concert Party.

The cloak, which is beautifully made up of the feathers of native birds, is one from the Mahaki and Waioeka Brown Collection recently presented to the Gisborne Museum. It was given to the Brown family many years ago by Tuhoe tribes as a gesture of thanks for hospitality.

Vivienne is holding a very fine Wahaika of whalebone of pre-European manufacture, which is part of the W. D. Lysnar collection.

Back Cover:

After paying her first visit to Gisborne, the inter-colonial motor ship Abel Tasman, which brought timber and hardwood poles from Newcastle, is seen sailing down the channel.
