Butler's Wall

42

Pile driving on the seaward side of Butler's Wall has now been completed, and the driving of another 50 piles on the harbour side will see the work completed. Apart from the original test work, the actual reconstruction of the wall, estimated at the time to take five years, will probably be completed by next March, in only four years.

The wall, which protects the inner harbour, is 912ft long. The rebuilding work has been done throughout by the Harbour Board's staff.

Butler's Wall does not join to the shore. Instead, it ends at this old and somewhat battered wall of concrete slabs. Opinion is divided on question of continuing the new wall to replace this section. At left is Waikanae Beach and pavilion.
