Waikanae Beach almost escaped its annual covering of drift wood this year, but a fresh in the rivers last month provided the annual supply for Guy Fawkes Day fires. The job of raking up and burning off some of the surplus had a sequel when a night wind fanned a fire to the point where the brigade was called out at 4 a.m. to deal with the outbreak.
