Two Lives Lost

Two women were killed, and the husband of one and the brother of the other were admitted to hospital with severe head injuries, when this car (above and below left) crashed into a power pole on the Lavenham Road, near Patutahi, at 2.45 a.m. on Sunday, September 6. The car, after hitting the pole, somersaulted into a deep ditch, where it came to rest up-side-down. Those killed were Miss Lavinia Wilson, aged 21, of 6 Temple Street, Gisborne, and Mrs Tatahi Tuari, of Marton Road, Gisborne. The injured were John Tuari, and Rangi Wilson, of Muriwai. Mrs Morgan, of Muriwai, another occupant, was allowed to go home after treatment at the hospital. The car, as can be seen, was a total wreck.

The car was involved in an accident at Ruatoria on the same weekend, and the one pictured at the foot of the page was one of two involved in an earlier collision at the corner of Ballance Street and Clifford Street.
