Pictures from the Past

Recent functions in both Australia and New Zealand marking the achievements of the now almost legendary Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, make these two pictures of particular interest to older Gisborne readers.

Taken by E. T. Doddrell in the early 1930's, the "Southern Cross" is pictured above at Darton Field, when "Smithy" was barnstorming the country to raise funds for his next pioneering flight. Picture below shows the interior of "Southern Cross", looking forward.
