Southerly Buster Hits Port

Although the weather forecasts indicated that Gisborne's much-delayed spring weather might be "any day now", the weekend of September 7 and 8 produced a gale from the south which topped the Wharerata hills with snow, bashed the coastline with mountainous waves, and made the task of men finalising work on the Waikokopu slip anything but pleasant. The big seas caused some erosion damage to protective works at the Turanganui River mouth. In these pictures enormous waves are seen battering the much-battered breakwater at the harbour.
