New Nurses' Home Opened

The new six-storey wing of the Cook Hospital Nurses' Home, which has been rising on the Gisborne skyline since 1954, was officially opened on Saturday, October 6, by the Minister for the Welfare of Women and Children, Dame Hilda Ross.

Built at a cost of £185,000, fully furnished, the new wing is regarded as the best building of its type in the Dominion.

After a week of fine weather, rain drove the opening celebrations indoors to the assembly hall of the wing.

But first Dame Hilda cut a ribbon at the entrance, with a pair of gold scissors presented to her by the architects.

She is seen at the entrance with Mr J. B. Williams, chairman of the Cook Hospital Board, and Mrs Williams. Holding the ribbon is Mr Graham Fox, representing the architects, Messrs Haughey and Fox, Auckland.

The striking, modern lines of the new wing are revealed in the picture above.
Responsible for the design were Messrs Haughey & Fox; Miss R. Ennor, Auckland, planned the interior decorations; and the builders were Messrs J. L. McMillan and Company.
The building provides accommodation for 64 nurses and sisters.

The emphasis throughout the building is on bright colours and comfortable surroundings.
