Tragedy At Te Karaka

When a car left the Kanakanaia road near Te Karaka on a Saturday evening early this month and plunged into the flooded Waipaoa River, a passenger in the back seat, Richard Trevor Morris, aged 30, single, was trapped in the car and drowned. He was a soldier home on leave from overseas.

Two other men who were in the front seat escaped. They were James Broughton, married, farm manager, of Kanakanaia, and Nita Nepia, a farm hand. Mr Broughton was driving.

The accident took place half a mile past the Kanakanaia bridge, where the road rounds a bluff about 30 feet above the river.

The car was located some days later about 200 yards downstream.
