Workmen have made a start on a £25,000 contract to renovate the Gisborne Hotel Childers Road. Two new bars and a bottle store are to be built. The outside walls will be tiled and plastered.

The Gisborne Harbour Board's giant crane was brought into action this month to lift four transformers, each weighing 20 tons, from the wagons on which they were railed from Stratford. They are being installed in the Patutahi line.

Mr Des Fielder, pictured here (right) with his class of young Gisborne pipers, has left on a two-year holiday in Scotland. He plans to study piping in Edinburgh.
