Magnificent Waterfalls

32

Hidden away is the upper reaches of the Ruakituri River, about 35 miles above Te Reinga and 80 miles from Gisborne, lie one of New Zealand's most spectacular waterfalls, seen in all their splendour on the page opposite. Except for an occasional venturesome fishing or tramping party these beautiful falls are seldom seen, for they cannot be reached except by following the river for four or five miles above Papuni Station, where the road ends. Map below gives their location in relation to Gisborne.

Pictures on these pages were taken by Mr E. Craill, Patutahi, who went in with a fishing party last summer. Fishing above the falls was disappointing, but the scenery more than made up for this.
