Champions Meet

Hec McLeod, a splint-maker At Cook Hospital, put Gisborne on the world rowing map is 1952 with his selection in the N.Z. fouroar team for the Olympic Games at Helsinki.

This year Mark Irwin, son of Mr & Mrs W. L. Irwin, Iranui Road, will give the city representation at the Games as a member of the N. Z. eight to row at Melbourne.

The two champions met for the first time this month and marked the occasion with a short row on the Taraheru River. The skiff moved across the water with such power and grace that spectators would hawe thought they'd rowed together all their lives.

Mark, an ex-pupil of Gisborne Intermediate School, is also an All Black. At present he is a medical student at Otago University.
