Photo News To Cease Publication

It is with very much regret that we announce the next issue of Photo News as the last to be published.

This decision has been reached on economic grounds. Rising costs over the past few years have presented us with a continual predicament which, in the main, has been whether to keep faith with our thousands of constant readers or cease publication and cut our losses. We chose the former. However, time and costs have overtaken us more-so and despite production streamlining, the selling of colour advertising, and increases in the retail price of the magazine, our losses give us no alternative now but to face the economic facts. These facts (which also include a future with no prospects of the situation being alleviated) confirm our decision to cease publication as the only one possible.

However, our successful diversification into high quality colour printing, and commercial work, is at a point where we are able to utilize the spare production available through the magazine closing. It is satisfactory also that no staff adjustments are envisaged although photographer/editor Neville Spence is leaving us, after 10 years, to take a position as sales manager with a city retail company.

In our final issue next month we intend to include a brief pictorial history of Gisborne as seen by Photo News cameras since 1954.

Meanwhile all of us here at 87 Derby Street wish to express our very many thanks to the thousands of loyal readers who have supported Photo News over the past 21 years.

Signed: John Logan, Managing Director.
