Bumper Birthday Gift

The Senior Citizens' Association was in receipt of a bumper gift at the September Birthday Concert. The Cheer and Charity Club gave the association eight new card tables, packs of cards to go with them, and a brand new speaker system. This was much appreciated by all those present and they showed their appreciation in no uncertain warmth.

This banner, depicting scenes of Gisborne prior to the turn of the century, has just been hung in the Museum. It was commissioned in 1900 by the then president of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, Mr J. Whineray, presented by him to the chamber, and marks the turning of the first sod at the start of the Gisborne to Te Karaka railway. Mr A. W. L. Martin, grandson of Mr Whineray, has re-presented the banner to the museum. Originally executed by artist F. F. C. Huddlestone, the work has been recently restored by Roy Huxtable. From left, Messrs Roy Huxtable, Vic Okeby (present president of the Chamber Of Commerce), Sir Robert Hall (voluntary Museum worker), and Museum Curator Warner Haldane.
