A Ton Of Trouble

After experiencing a lot of trouble with a very strong swell (originating somewhere south of the South Island and rising to 15 and 20 feet in Poverty Bay) the South Korean freighter Atlas Counsellor, taking 15,000 tonnes of Gisborne maize to South-East Asia, finally managed to depart in one piece. Eleven lines, and help from the Harbour Board tug "Hikurangi," were used at one stage to hold the ship steady in port as she rode out the unusual swell. However, loading was eventually completed and the ship is pictured here just before its departure on the long looked for clear and much calmer day.
