Buildings Go... And Buildings Come

With the purchase, so far, of five properties for the new housing division in Nelson Road, some clearing activity has been seen. This is on the area where a freezing works once operated. The Nelson Brothers' works operated from 1889 to 1920. It was then sold to the Vestv group, becoming known as Nelson's (N.Z.) Ltd. When Nelson's (N.Z.) Ltd bought the works at Waipaoa in 1923 this complex was dismantled.

The processed stock from the Nelson road works was carried by barge, down a much wider and deeper Taruheru River than seen at present, to the old river harbour for export.

This picture of the old works was taken from near the end of Steed Avenue. The bridge at the left of the picture led into a road which came along the river-bank and climbed into Steed Avenue.

The site as it appears today in a picture taken from approximately the same position. The location of the chimney stack is white-arrowed in both pictures. The black arrow (BELOW) shows the last remaining building.

The last building on the site is the wool processing shed, now cleared away.

A weir in the Hapara Stream supplied water for the building. The abutments of a swing bridge that crossed the river on the same site as the weir are seen on each side of the stream.

This depression was once a channel, from the river to the shed, that allowed barges to come up for cleaning and loading.

The wreck of the last remaining barge.

The base of the chimney stack remains alone on the site of the old works. Future development will see an area of new houses here.
