Splendid Support

The newly formed Poverty Bay Rugby Supporters' Club started off on the right foot when it held a farewell function for the Poverty Bay reps, prior to their four-match South Island tour. The aim of the club's organisers is to foster more actual support for rugby in the district, and on all levels, not just at the top. Any funds raised will be used to support the game where ever needed, in the form of jerseys, balls, boots, and that sort of thing.

The very energetic and enthusiastic committee is, from left, in front, “Smokey” Fairlie, Tom Brown, Grant Allen snr, Queenie Brown, Trixie Allen and Pat Fairlie. At back, Dick Twisleton, John Heikell (president) and Alan Ogilvie (liaison).

Present at the function were Tony and Pat Sheehan. Mr Sheehan is giving up the position as Poverty Bay selector-coach, a position he has held since 1963. He is, at present, the longest serving provincial selector still in office in New Zealand. Supporters, guests and reps at the function included,
