Powerful Polo For A Perfect Year

The Poverty Bay Polo Club is on top of the world after its "A" team pulverized all opposition to win the country's premier polo trophy; the Savile Cup. The national tournament for this, and other cups, was held at Feilding where the best of ponies and players were seen in action. This year was also the diamond anniversary of the first time Poverty Bay won the Savile Cup, away back in 1914. Even more remarkable is the fact that both teams contained three brothers in their ranks. This year it was the Kirkpatrick brothers, David, Joh'n and Colin, while in 1914 it was the Sherratt brothers, Phil, Thornley and Randall, Randall being the father of Woody Sherratt, the present president of the club.

A magnificent new cup was presented to the club by Dr Basil Aldwell and it is to be called the Sandy Kirkpatrick Cup in honour of the late Mr Kirkpatrick. What the cup will be awarded for has, as yet, to be decided. With the handsome new cup are, from left, David Kirkpatrick, Mrs and Dr Aldwell, Mrs Kirkpatrick and Mr and Mrs Woody Sherratt. The prize-giving cocktail party and presentation of the new cup wound up a more than very successful season for the club.
