Trophy Dedicated

At the Tower House (the Te Ua family home), Te Karaka, on August 25, a ceremony was held to dedicate the "Te Kani Te Ua Memorial Trophy." The trophy has been presented by the Tairawhiti Women's Health League and is for annual competition, between Health Leagues of the Rotorua/Gisborne area, for a Pingao Hat. Pingao is one of the much valued and rarer type flaxes that becomes a beautiful gold colour when processed. The trophy, which is in the shape of a Te Wharewanga Nga (House of Learning) and was made by Mr Mick Fisher with the carving being done by Mr Ngata Ruru, is in memory of the late Te Kani Te Ua, one of the chief Rangatiras of the Te Karaka district.
