Ruatoria Days

Gisborne Days

From Mr Alfred Smith (Lonsdale Crescent, Wellington), who was reared and educated in Gisborne and lived here for 20 years, come these two pictures of '20s and '30s.

From Mrs H. M. Akers, Haronga Road, we have this picture of Ruatoria taken in 1937. The fact that it is race day is the reason for the large number of cars in the street. The Waiapu Racing Club held meetings for many years prior to the war. Smyth's Store and the Manutahi Hotel dominate the centre left of the picture.

This picnic party was snapped at Makorori Beach in 1926. They say these fashions are just about to do the rounds again.

The location of this shot, on the Peel Street corner, is self explanatory, if you know where 'The Beehive' is. It was taken after the 1931 earthquake. The tower on the corner building, being made of wood, did not come down.
