Pictures From The Past

From Mrs E. Olsen, 240 Stout Street, comes this picture taken in 1933. It shows the Hunger March getting under way, a reaction to the depression of the late 1920s and early 30s.
P.S. If you think protest marching is something new, forget it

From Mr Stuart McGuinness, Waitangi Street, we have these two photographs from way back. The one of the harbour entrance wasn't actually. The picture is of a tender entering the river, in the days when the smaller boats tied up in the Turanganui River, below the original Reads Quay. Those swells have evidently been with us a long time too.

The picture of the old Roebuck Road bridge, with its drawbridge working, will not be recalled by many. Punts and small boats brought meat down from the Taruheru works, further up the river. Those trees on the bank on the other side of the river have long since gone and it is there that the Lowe Doon gardens are now situated.
