Mr Park Pittar was made a life member of the Poverty Bay Turf Club at the Annual General Meeting, on September 30. Mr Pittar, who stepped down from the office of president after six years, has been a member of the club for nigh on 50 years, the past 29 years as a committee member. He has served as a patrol steward, a birdcage steward, entertainment steward, and as vice-president for a number of years, before becoming president. From left are Mr Pittar, Mr Brian Burke (new president), Mr Jack White, who has retired as secretary after 16 years in office, and Mr Ken Norman (new secretary).

Mr Harry Lunn is the club's new vice-president.

Mr Richard White was elected chairman bf the Cook Hospital Board, recently. He replaces former chairman Arthur Bartlett, who has moved to Palmerston North.

Gisborne born and bred author Witi Ihimaera paid a flying visit to the city upon the publication of his book, "Pounamu Pounamu" (Greenstone Greenstone). This collection of stories of Maori life and values will have wide appeal, described as they are with deep personal insight.
