Lemons Go Sky High

Off To The States

×

5650 pounds (more than 2½ tons) of lemons went sky high on their trip from Gisborne to Invereargill. Once again, the people of this city responded generously to supply their spare lemons for "Operation Sunshine," wherein the fruit is air-freighted south for distribution to senior citizens and deserving institutions. Don't forget, lemons can go as high as six or seven cents each in the shops down south! Shown with some of the thousands of lemons are Mayor Harry Barker, Radio Gisborne manager Ian Vernazoni and N.A.C. manager Colin Bell.

This group of entertainers from Gisborne will be joining the 70-strong New Zealand Maori Company, which is to tour the U.S.A. and Canada, soon. They are now training together at Ngaruawahia, after which they will leave for their five-month trip. The best of luck to them! From left, at back, Messrs B. Wehi, H. Callaghan, P. Reedy, R. Tuhura and the Rev. A. Takarua. In front, Mrs Wehi, Mrs Callaghan, Miss K. Kingi and Mrs Reedy.
