"Alohas" Galore

Lavish decorations, a spectacular island-style floor show, leis by the mile and a delicious tropical supper were the highlights of a glamorous Hawaiian luau evening, organised by the Poverty Bay L.D.S. Church social group. The event was enjoyed by a large crowd of dancers, all wearing Hawaiian dress, at the District Centre in Stout Street.

The main attraction during the floor show was the "Nani Vali," or Stick Dance. The performers are, from left, front row: Whaiora Enoka, with the ipu, or gourd, and Mabel Farmer, Celia Kahuroa and Nancy Whaanga, with stones. Middle row: Pauline Nepia, Sandra Haronga, Cathlene Robinson and Susan Haronga, with bamboos. Back row: Jennifer Whaanga, Mihi Hapi, Romia Kaua and Paea Thompson, also with bamboos.
