Getting Around
Or Orienteering, To You
Very popular in Europe now is orienteering. A course is set and participants set off with a compass and map to find their way over the course and orientate themselves with the lay of the land. Such a course was set by Mr Dave Hughes at Makarori recently (one windy, wet day in particular) and many Guides, Scouts and Venturers took part.
Ready to take off over the course, which went along the beach then over the hills, are Peter McGrannachan (left) and Bill Gordon.
From left, time-keeper Gordon Gibson, course-setter Dave Hughes and observer Bill Peach.
Second place-getters in the contest were, from left, Takitimu Venturers Chris Read, John Dowell, Peter Ballantyne and Mike Berry.
Studying the course in the allowable five minutes before starting time are David White (left) and David Coles.
