Just The Best

Thousands At The Show

Perfect weather on both days brought crowds of thousands to the 91st P.B. Agricultural and Pastoral Show. Entries were exceptionally good in all sections, providing one of the best shows in the Association's history.

There were two big chopping attractions in the main ring, after the Grand Parade. The first was the attempt, by Jock Bentley of Featherston, to beat the New Zealand record of 19,1 seconds for the 13 inch underhand chop in lombardy poplar. One of the best axemen in the country, Bentley just failed in the attempt, his time being 19.5 seconds.

The other attraction was the jigger chop. A whopping handicap of 55 didn't prevent Mark Smith of Kaikoura from going like the hammers to win the event in a great finish with three other axemen.

A lot of the fun at the show is provided by the side-shows, and the stalls, and the rides. Dominating the area is the ferris wheel which always had a full load.
