A Gem of an Occasion

A rare and notable occasion in the history of marriages occurred recently when Mr and Mrs E. W. Dyer, 21 Derby Street, celebrated their blue sapphire wedding anniversary. They have been married for'65 years! He is 93 and she is 86.

Mr Dyer went to sea at 17, and later served in the Boer War.

One week after being married at Barry in South Wales on May 26,1906,; the Dyers sailed for New Zealand. After living in Auckland for a while they moved to Huntly where Mr Dyer was a winding engineer at a coal mine. In 1911 he started as an engineer with the N.Z. Co-op Dairy Co., and retired from that position 35 years later in 1946. They came to live in Gisborne then, where they built their house in Derby Street.
