The Cold, Cold Ground

During winter we can expect falls of snow in the high country such as that on Arawhana Station. The picture above, from manager Ted Clews of Arawhana Station, shows Mt. Arawhana heavily mantled in snow.

It comes as a bit of a shock then, after a balmy early spring, to be belted with hailstones as big as marbles right here in town.

Hail covers the roof and tank of this residence in Sievwright Lane.

The size of the stones can be gauged by Maurice Clark's hand as he scoops some up.

Just as well this Narcobatus faichildi, Whai repo, or Electric Ray to you, is dead. Otherwise all the fences around town might be electrified. Chris Flood and John Winter with the ray they found (dead, luckily) on the mud flats below the Derby Street bridge.
