A "ship load" of Hastings Orphans raided Gisborne on July 26. Gisborne Orphans were alerted and were on hand outside the Army Hall to battle with the raiders.

Gisborne Orphans soon got the upper hand and the beaten Orphans had to pull the "brig", Ndevr, from the Army Hall to the Abercorn Hall.

Andy Laing (Hastings' chief) was captured by "able seaman" Dick Burson "rear-admiral" Jim Phear, and "able seaman" George Odams and put in chains aboard the "brig", Ndevr. As further punishment each of the Hastings Orphans received a dose of aniseed oil.
