With the passing of Whaianga Thompson (Tamihana) recently, and that of Tuakana Huhu some years ago, only one of the three pictured remains, and he is Nopera Kirikiri. In this photograph taken in 1923 a different style of portraiture is well documented. Standing are Tuakana Huhu (left) and Nopera Kirikiri, while seated is Whaianga Thompson. Whaianga was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs Epiha Tamihana Te-Ao, of Mangaheia, and was one of four brothers, the others being Julian, Weti (killed in action in Tunisia), and Tupa. Whaianga was with the Maori Battalion in Greece, Crete, the Middle East and Italy.
