From Mrs E. M. Kelling, Lower Hutt, and formerly of Gisborne, comes this picture taken in October, 1918, when the last of the 1 bullock teams was in use. The picture shows the wool shed and a team of bullocks on Mangatuna Station which was once owned by Mrs Kelling's father, Mr W. A. Russell. He came to New Zealand from England with his family in 1910 and bought Mangatuna Station from Mr W. MacLaurin, whose family is now at Hexton. The station, which was sold in 1919, is now owned by Mr J. Hegarty.

What the well-dressed picnicker and punter wore in the old days can be seen in this picture. It was taken at the "Hole-in-the Wall", at the end of Darwin Road, "in the good old days".

From Mr George How Chow, 96 Chalmers Road, comes this picture taken of a contingent of troops, leaving for the Boer War, in 1900. The photograph would be taken from a vantage point on Townley's building looking down Gladstone Road across Peel Street, the building on the left being where Charlie Brown's is now. Mr Hoar Chow's grandfather owned the Universal Dining Room. This was destroyed by fire a short time after the picture was taken, and Mr How Chow's father, England How Chow of Kingsley Road, can just remember being grabbed out of bed and pushed through a window to safety.
